Tell us about your Hispanic heritage.

I was born in Mexico and raised in the US. I’m very proud of my immigrant and Mexican-American heritage.

What does it personally mean to be able to help New York City small businesses?

To me helping small businesses and entrepreneurs is about furthering economic self-determination and stemming inequality. Owning a small business can be transformative for a low-income family. Small businesses are critical for job creation and local industry. Small businesses can save the world!

What is the coolest or quirkiest thing you’ve ever done?

As a younger chap I trekked through Patagonia on an unseasonably cold winter. Not the best idea in retrospect but definitely a cool experience.

What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

Brooklyn’s my adoptive home and I like to keep it local. Whether it’s the Brighton Beach boardwalk, Sunset Park’s Chinatown, or the Red Hook pier, weekends in Brooklyn never let me down.

What is your favorite sport/team?

Team SBS!!

  • NYC Business Solutions Centers are located near some of New York City’s vibrant Spanish-speaking neighborhoods, including Harlem and on Fordham Road in the Bronx.
  • All seven NYC Business Solutions Centers can serve Spanish-speaking customers with free business services using interpretation services that are available through the City’s Language Line Services.

image

image

  • We are launching the NYC Craft Entrepreneurship Programin Spanish, which helps unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers with craft skills earn supplemental income from selling their craft online.
  • We have started tweeting on SBS Twitter accounts in Spanish to spread the word of SBS’ free services through new social networks – follow the conversation using #SBSEspañol
  • SBS has increased outreach for NYC Business Acceleration services specifically to immigrant communities outside of Manhattan, with outreach materials translated into Spanish and a campaign to promote the program’s recent expansion into the retail and industrial sectors.
  • Latino small businesses can also certify as a Minority-owned business with the City and compete on City contracts.

  • SBS is expanding free business services to better help the Spanish-speaking community through the Immigrant Business Initiative. We’re celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) staff, services, and businesses we’ve helped. Read on to learn more about Mexican native Fany Gerson of Dough, who has benefitted from services provided by NYC Business Acceleration, NYC Business Solutions, and Workforce1.

"Dough is definitely worth the trip out to Brooklyn. Trust me. I even shared a box with a few random strangers who admittedly didn’t like donuts…until they took a bite of Dough’s." – Liza de Guia, Food. Curated.

Dough, a celebration of pastry-chef Fany Gerson’s passion for culture and her culinary excellence, opened because there was a demand for artisan doughnuts that was not being met in the NYC market. After opening in 2011, Dough experienced explosive growth, with retail and wholesale demand exceeding their capacity to produce their signature doughnuts.

Fany is a James Beard Foundation Nominee for Baking and Desserts for her cookbook, “My Sweet Mexico: Recipes for Authentic Pastries, Breads, Candies, Beverages, and Frozen Treats.” She has gotten rave reviews for her unique flavors inspired by her Mexican heritage from Gothamist (“one of the city’s most spectacular confections”), The New York Times (“as crazily good as it sounds”), and The Village Voice (“some of the most exciting, delicious glazes in town”), to name a few. Yahoo Travel included them on their list of “The Most Delicious Doughnuts Worth Waiting In Line For" and earlier this year, Grub Street named their donuts #1 in the country!

Fany will be featured on Cooking Channel’s Unique Sweets on November 4 at 7 p.m.

Her next location’s grand opening will be October 15 at 14 West 19th Street in Manhattan. Stop by every morning from 6 – 10 a.m. for your free doughnuts until the store’s grand opening. Follow DoughBrooklyn.com closely for details about a grand opening surprise!

We’re celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) staff, services, and businesses we’ve helped. Read on to learn more about Colombian-American Farid Ali Lancheros of Bogotá Latin Bistro, who has benefitted from services provided by NYC Business Acceleration and NYC Business Solutions.

"What you’ve done for this community is incredible." – Bogotá Latin Bistro customer

Bogotá Latin Bistro is a restaurant dedicated to elevating the status of Latin foods, particularly Colombian cuisine, and culture via food, music, service, and attention to detail. After four years of intense research and preparation on how to run a successful business, Farid Ali Lancheros and George Constantinou Fernandes – both with no prior experience in starting a business – opened Bogotá Latin Bistro in July 2005.

Currently, Bogotá Latin Bistro has about 70 employees, and grossed more than 4 million in revenue last year. Bogotá Latin Bistro is a five-time Inc. 5000 Honoree, winner of the Small Business Person of the Year Award for 2013 from the U.S. Small Business Administration’s New York District Office, and a National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation 2014 Faces of Diversity Awards finalist. Farid and George were invited to the White House earlier this year to discuss Living Wages and employees’ overtime pay.

In May, Farid was featured on the cover of El Diario [video here], and in August he was a guest on ABC 7’s Tiempo with Joe Torres, along with SBS Deputy Commissioner Robinson Hernandez [view Part 1 and Part 2 of the interview]. Additionally, Farid and Bogotá Latin Bistro have been featured in commercials for NYC’s Paid Sick Leave Law (en Español), AMEX Small Business Saturday, ink from Chase, and Google Ad Words.
