This week, in recognition of the two year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, we’re asking all of you to visit businesses in the neighborhoods impacted by the storm.
Spend your lunch hour in the Seaport, head to Red Hook, South Queens or Coney Island for dinner, or stop by Hylan Boulevard on the East Shore of Staten Island to show your support. All of the neighborhoods included in the City’s designated business recovery zones are listed below.
When you visit a business in a Sandy-affected neighborhood this week, make sure to take a photo and share your experience on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook and use the hashtag #ShopSandyBiz.

On Monday, NYC Department of Small Business Services Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer visited new storefronts along Mermaid Avenue that are being renovated as part of the city’s Hurricane Sandy Storefront Improvement Program. Funded by the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, the program has provided more than $1 million in grants to help 72 small businesses across the city renovate storefronts damaged by Hurricane Sandy and restore the vitality of local commercial corridors impacted by the storm. Supported in Coney Island by the Alliance for Coney Island, Astella Development Corporation, and the Business Outreach Center Network (BOCNET), more than a dozen storefronts are being rebuilt along Mermaid Avenue, as part of the program.
Yesterday, NYC Department of Small Business Services Commissioner Maria Torres-Springer visited small businesses in the Rockaways that were impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

We all proudly read the news about the work veterans do protecting our country. However, what often doesn’t make the news is the impact these heroes have on the business world.
Check out these statistics which belie their contributions to the startup ecosystem as the nation celebrates National Veterans Small Business Week and Veteran’s Day:
- 3 million: The number of businesses veterans run in the United States
- 5.7 million: The number of people employed by veterans, which equates to $210 billion in annual payroll and $1.2 trillion in sales
- 30%: The portion of all American businesses owned by veterans; interestingly, while veterans make up only 8% of the U.S. population, they are twice as likely to own a business as the general population
- 7%: The number of businesses owned by veterans still open after 10 years; according to the Small Business Administration, compared to one-third of all businesses that survive 10 years or more.
On a rainy November 6, the nypl Science, Industry, and Business Library hosted the 2nd Annual NYC Small Business Technology Expo. This free event is part of a citywide initiative supported by the New York City Department of Small Business Services, Citi Community Development, and the NYC Small Business Technology Coalition.
