NYC NBAT

On Friday, December 13, NYCEDC and the NYC Dept. of Small Business Services announced the expansion of NYC Business Acceleration to serve supermarkets and grocery stores offering a full array of food products.

Since launching in 2010, NYC Business Acceleration has helped more than 1,600 food and beverage businesses, creating nearly 23,000 jobs, open faster by reducing the time and effort needed to meet City requirements like plan reviews and inspections. Offering NYC Business Acceleration services to supermarket and grocery store clients will help these businesses to navigate City approvals, shaving weeks and in some cases months off of their pre-opening period.

The announcement was made at the grand opening of the first supermarket utilizing the expanded NYC Business Acceleration programming, a Food Bazaar Supermarket at 42-02 Northern Boulevard in Long Island City.

We are looking for local veteran business owners to serve as mentors for the Veteran Entrepreneurship Program, starting in February 2014! We will be matching mentors to one or two local veterans who are looking to launch a new business this coming year.

Through just a few meetings over the course of the four-week program, you can shape our participants’ future as business owners by relaying your story, reviewing business ideas and plans, connecting to resources and networks, and providing ongoing support to a fellow veteran.

All mentors must have military experience (or a meaningful interest or connection) and have launched their own business. The mentor does not have to be a current business owner in the New York City area, but must have launched or operated their own business at one point in time. We are looking for mentors that reflect a diverse range of sectors, product and/or service offerings, customer bases, and business sizes to support participant interests and goals.

Other mentor qualities that support a fruitful mentor-participant relationship, include, but are not limited to:

  • Sincerely interested in contributing to a new veteran entrepreneur’s growth
  • Available for regular check-ins with both the participant and the Veteran Program Manager
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in chosen professional field
  • Regularly demonstrate entrepreneurial values, interests, and activities
  • Able to reflect on the successes and challenges faced in their own business ownership
  • Active in a healthy, professional network
  • Able to connect participants to formal and informal supports
  • Able to facilitate useful introductions for participants to the veteran business community

Check out the full mentorship program overview here.

If you are interested in mentoring or learning more about the Veterans Entrepreneurship Program, please contact Veteran Program Manager Erin Huie directly.

Visit the new NYC Business Atlas, an interactive map launched by DoITT, the Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics, and the Department of Small Business Services.

This new tool helps small businesses better understand the economic conditions in their neighborhoods by combining information on population demographics with business filings, tax receipts, and pedestrian activity. Available at maps.nyc.gov/businessatlas, the Business Atlas enables local businesses to make better decisions about where to open their doors and how to operate.

According to NYC Chief Analytics Officer Mike Flowers: “This project is an extension of the City’s Open Data efforts. Data transparency means better information for those that live and work in our neighborhoods, and that means more than just raw numbers. The Business Atlas is an easy-to-use visualization that shows that you don’t need to be a data scientist to make good use of NYC data.”
