2015 marks the first time Pew Research Center has asked specifically about mobile messaging apps as a separate kind of mobile activity apart from cell phone texting. These types of apps are adding to an already complex terrain of digital and social communication that includes various social media platforms and online discussion forums. Released today, some findings from our report, “Mobile Messaging and Social Media 2015″ include:

• 36% of adult smartphone owners use mobile messaging apps such as iMessage, WhatsApp or Kik.
• 17% of adult smartphone owners use auto-deleting apps such as Snapchat or Wickr.
• Facebook remains the most popular social media site: 72% of online adults use it, amounting to 62% of all American adults.
• 15% of internet users read or comment in discussion forums such as reddit, Digg or Slashdot.
